Course Description: Academic Vocabulary and Corpus (ESL)
Course Title: Academic Vocabulary and Corpus (ESL) Level: 3rd Semester University ESL Learners Duration: 14 weeks (56 hours)
Course Overview: The Academic Vocabulary and Corpus class is designed to enhance the language proficiency and academic skills of 3rd-semester university ESL learners. This course focuses on expanding students' academic vocabulary and enhancing their understanding of how language is used in authentic academic contexts through the utilization of corpus linguistics techniques.
Course Objectives:
- Expand Vocabulary Repertoire: Develop a deeper and more diverse academic vocabulary to comprehend and articulate complex ideas in academic writing, reading, and speaking tasks.
- Enhance Reading and Listening Skills: Improve the ability to comprehend academic texts and lectures by recognizing common collocations, academic phrases, and discourse markers.
- Strengthen Writing Proficiency: Apply newly acquired academic vocabulary in writing assignments, research papers, and essays to enhance clarity, coherence, and depth of expression.
- Refine Speaking and Presentation Skills: Practice using academic vocabulary effectively in oral presentations and discussions, promoting clarity and precision in communication.
- Utilize Corpus Linguistics Techniques: Introduce students to corpus linguistics tools and methodologies to analyze authentic academic texts and identify patterns in language usage.
- Foster Independent Language Learning: Encourage students to develop autonomy in language learning by utilizing corpus resources to expand vocabulary and improve language proficiency beyond the classroom setting.

Week 1: Introduction to Academic Vocabulary
Week 2-3: Academic Vocabulary in Written Language: AWL
Week 4-5: Academic Vocabulary in Written Language: NAWL
Week 6-7: Academic Vocabulary in Spoken Language: ASWL
Week 8: Academic Vocabulary in Speaking and Presentation
Week 9-10: Introduction to Corpus Linguistics
Week 11-12: Corpus-based Vocabulary Learning
Week 13-14: Project and Portfolio Assessment
Assessment: Assessment in this course will be based on a combination of factors, including class participation, performance in various assignments, quizzes, projects, and the final portfolio. The emphasis will be on the practical application of academic vocabulary and the integration of corpus linguistics techniques to enhance language skills for academic success.
Prerequisites: Students enrolling in this course are expected to have completed the previous ESL courses for university students or have demonstrated an equivalent level of English language proficiency. Basic computer literacy and access to digital resources will be necessary for conducting corpus research.
